I’ve been selling on Etsy for 17 years, since my daughter was one and I was getting antsy to work again. My original shop was open for four years until we moved and I was just too unorganized to feel like setting it all up again.
ADHD, yo.
I fiddled around for a while and then a couple years later launched what would be my biggest success yet. I became a Handcrafted Product Based Small Business coach. I had a Facebook group of over 30K. I was kicking ass and taking names.
Then my mom died. I fell apart. I took a couple years off from everything before I decided what I wanted to try to do.
Now I can’t keep an Etsy shop open to save my life.
Why? Randon shop suspensions on Etsy
Etsy’s new bot system is shite and shuts everything down.
I can confidently say that I know I did not and have never broken Etsy ‘rules’. In fact, a few of the shops I’ve tried to open have been frozen before I’ve listed anything.

Shop Suspensions on Etsy
Running an Etsy shop can be a dream come true for many creatives and small business owners. It’s a platform that allows you to reach a global audience and turn your passion into profit. However, there’s a growing concern among Etsy sellers that casts a shadow over this dream: the sudden and unexplained closure of shops. Imagine waking up one morning to find that your shop, your source of income, has been shut down without warning or a clear reason. This is a reality that many sellers are facing, and it’s time we talk about it.
Understanding the Issue
Over the past year, there have been numerous reports of Etsy closing shops without prior notice. These closures often happen without any clear explanation, leaving sellers confused and helpless. What’s more alarming is that many of these shops have not violated any of Etsy’s policies, making the situation even more perplexing.
Stories from the Community
Take Minnie, for instance, a seller who had been running her successful jewelry shop on Etsy for over five years. Without any warning, her shop was suddenly closed, and her funds were frozen. Despite multiple attempts to contact Etsy’s support, she received generic responses with no clear resolution. Her story is not unique. Many other sellers have shared similar experiences on forums and social media platforms, highlighting a pattern of abrupt and unexplained shop closures.
Potential Reasons for Closures
While Etsy’s exact criteria for these closures remain unclear, there are a few potential reasons that could be contributing to this issue:
Algorithmic Errors: Etsy relies heavily on automated systems to monitor and manage its platform. These systems are not infallible and can sometimes flag shops incorrectly.
Policy Changes: Etsy frequently updates its policies, and sometimes these changes can lead to unintended consequences. Sellers may unknowingly fall afoul of new rules that weren’t in place when they first set up their shops.
High-Risk Categories: Certain categories of products may be deemed higher risk, leading to stricter scrutiny and more frequent closures.
How and why they are closing shops before they’re open is still a complete mystery. Even with the new 15$ ‘Security Fee’ in place, Etsy is still shutting down shops moments after opening even having paid this arbitrary fee.
Impact on Sellers
The impact of these sudden closures can be devastating. For many sellers, their Etsy shop is their primary source of income. A sudden closure not only affects their financial stability but also damages their reputation and customer relationships. Additionally, the process of appealing a closure is often slow and frustrating, with no guarantee of a positive outcome.
What Can Sellers Do?
While the risk of sudden closures is a concerning issue, there are steps sellers can take to protect themselves:
Diversify Sales Channels: Don’t rely solely on Etsy for your sales. Set up your own website, and explore other platforms like Shopify, Amazon Handmade, or eBay. I personally prefer WIX, which is where I am blogging to you from now.
Stay Informed: Keep up with Etsy’s policy updates and make sure you understand the rules. Join seller forums and communities to stay informed about any potential issues.
Document Everything: Keep detailed records of your communications with customers and Etsy support. This documentation can be invaluable if you need to appeal a closure.
Build a Strong Brand: Focus on building a strong brand presence outside of Etsy. Use social media, email marketing, and other tools to connect with your customers directly.
Etsy can be a fantastic platform for selling your printables, but it’s essential to be aware of the potential risks. The recent trend of sudden shop closures is a reminder that, as sellers, we need to be proactive in protecting our businesses.
